With soft lights glistening over the Seine like songs you can barely hear, Paris is undeniably one of the world’s most romantic cities. The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre are part of that elegant charm that surrounds the city. But beyond that there is much more: the dusty bookstores in hidden corners, the unsuspecting boutique store that you almost pass by without noticing, and the narrow streets where the smell of fresh crepes engulf you. Like Audrey Hepburn famously said “Paris is always a good idea.” One might be tempted to add: Especially when you’re madly in love.
Don’t skip out on the cliche landmarks
The city’s landmarks are some of the most widely recognized in the planet. While they may be cliche, they are cliche for a reason and are definitely worth witnessing with your own eyes. These landmarks will give you an insight into the heart of the city. Of course, you will have to visit the Eiffel Tower but make sure you also see the following.
Spend some time at the Louvre and see some of the most well-renowned artists in the world.
Stand on top of the city at the Sacre Coeur.
See the eternal flame at the Arc de Triomphe.
Indulge in world-famous cuisine
You haven’t been to Paris if you haven’t tried all the food you can get your hands on. Of course, French cuisine is a must, but the city also offers dishes from virtually every corner of the planet. From gourmet Italian to small Indian joints, there is always something to satisfy your every craving. Try the Champs Elysees for top tier restaurants, and Chinatown for more informal, but delicious places. One of the places that is off the beaten path that we fell in love with is La Table D’Akihiro. It is a small postage-stamp sized seafood restaurant set on a quiet side street in the 7th arrondissement. You will definitely not regret securing a table at the 16-seat restaurant where dishes are pieces of artwork. The chef Akihiro Horikoshiative worked with Bernard Pacaud at the Michelin three-star restaurant L’Ambroisie. He does it all with only one staff member… He shops, makes the daily menu, cooks, cleans up, mans the espresso machine, all the while listening to his favorite operas, the music playing discreetly in the background. He is old school so no website, you will need to call and make a reservation Tel: +33 1 45 44 43 48. They are open Tuesday-Saturday. Reservations are taken between 11am-3pm and 7-11pm.
Spend a day exploring Montmartre
Get away from the center and explore the city’s bohemian neighborhood. Here, you can walk up the famous Montmartre steps, find a park dedicated to love, visit the city’s only surviving vineyard, and go into an artist’s studio. With exquisitely intricate streets, there is no knowing what you’ll run into, but you know it’ll be exciting.
Have a picnic
Paris is dotted with beautiful parks that make for a perfect picnic. Parc Monceau, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, and Parc Montsouris might not be the first places in your guidebook, but they are arguably the best parks in the city. Pack some sandwiches, a bottle of wine, and some pastries, and indulge in a perfect day lying on the grass.
Take a day trip
If you want to get away from city life, Paris is surrounded by beautiful places that are easily accessible. Visit the opulent Palace of Versaille, or get lost in the charm of Monet’s garden at Giverny. The countryside will give you a fresh perspective of French life.
