HOW DID YOU MEET?? I truly believe there were some strong forces at hand in the universe that put us in each other’s lives. Back in 2011, I was still relatively new to our town and missed singing desperately after living for a few years without my high school choir. I was driving through town one day and saw a big banner on one of the local high schools for a Glee Club. I knew nothing, I knew no one, but my heart told me that I needed to join. I called up the director and was invited to audition immediately as try outs were ending that evening. I got in.I met many wonderful people in Glee Club, young and old, but there was one girl who stuck out to me. I had a serious musical crush on this girl. She was amazing. So amazing, that I asked her if she’d be willing to go for coffee and discuss singing together with me. The day we went for coffee, we realized we had so much in common that it felt like we had struck gold. And that night we formed a band, She Laughs. One night when we were jamming and going over some stuff in her attic-turned-studio, she let me know that she had invited her childhood friend, Rylee, to drum with us while we made music. I remember Rylee ascending the stairs, wearing his favourite leather jacket. I remember the three of us having immediate musical chemistry and killing ourselves laughing at ridiculous YouTube videos. I also remember finding out very quickly that Rylee had a longterm girlfriend, and cute as he was, he completely fell off of my romantic opportunity radar.Fast forward to the end of 2013, hundreds of hours of ugly laughs and platonic bonding later. Rylee had broken up with his girlfriend, and some weird vibes began to form between the two of us. Weird, happy, lovely vibes. Vibes that both of us know were dangerous to act upon if we also wished to maintain balance in She Laughs. So silently, we both decided not to acknowledge the feelings that we had. We pushed them back and hoped for the best.On February 14, 2014, my walls came tumbling down. After having a few glasses of wine, I asked for Rylee to come over for cuddles. There was no obvious precedence for such a request, but I was finally willing to put everything on the line to see whether we could have a story together. Rylee made my heart stop when said that he’d be right over.He pulled up, walked in, and we talked for hours. He made me laugh like he always had, and he made me feel more comfortable than I have ever felt with anyone else. I didn’t understand it that night, but I think I already deeply loved him. I have continued to love him day after day after day.
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR FIRST DATE? We spent so much time in our first week together just basking in our discovery of such a new and amazing world of being close with each other. We hid away from our friends and family, telling no one that we were together, living the most wonderful secret romance of our lives. We spent days just realizing how much we needed each other, through long talks, shared loves, and silly video games. Our first date was an afterthought, really. Rylee took me to his absolute favourite Thai restaurant where they know him by name. I knew that it was a big deal that he took me to this restaurant, so that felt really special. I think we might have gone for ice cream afterward.
WHEN DID YOU “KNOW’? I knew almost immediately after that night on Valentines Day that this was completely different and undeniably real. I was ready to tell him that I loved him after a week (I didn’t, for sake of not coming across crazy), and I would have said yes to a proposal within the first 6 months of dating.Rylee tells me that he was dying to tell me he loved me immediately too. He admitted in his proposal that he knew he would marry me in a single moment after 3 months together
TELL US YOUR PROPOSAL STORY! ?Part way through the week, Rylee asked me if I wanted to use the gift card we had received for my favourite fancy restaurant on a date night for Saturday. I loved the idea, looking forward to a reason to get all dolled up, and he responded that he booked us a reservation for 6:30. A few weeks earlier, at the end of our month long road trip, Rylee convinced me that an engagement wouldn’t be coming for a long while due to financial constraint, and I really believed him, so nothing about the date seemed fishy, it simply seemed as though he was making a nice romantic gesture. This is not unlike Rylee. The afternoon of the date, Rylee had to head to work at the local theatre where he runs lights and sound as a technician to make up for some hours that he missed during the week. While at work, he forgot his charger for his phone at home and asked for me to have it ready for him when he swung up to grab it. I did, thinking nothing of it, and eventually went on to getting ready for our fancy dinner. When Rylee came home to throw on his nice clothes around 6:00, he made sure to tell me that I looked beautiful. After I finished my hair and makeup, as we were putting on our shoes to step out the door, Rylee cursed under his breath. “We have to go to the theatre, I forgot both my phone AND charger.” Knowing that this was already a sore spot for him, I quickly agreed that we could stop at the theatre before heading to dinner. We pulled up to his work at 6:27 and he threw the car in park. “You should come in and see the renovations they’ve done on the front of house!” he said with a smile. I looked at him like he was a total weirdo. Our reservation was in 3 minutes. I shook my head, and pointed out the time. He seemed really adamant so I got out of the car and followed him into the building. It was silent inside, as it was a weekend without a show and the office staff would have gone home several hours ago. We toured the lobby quickly, and he started moving back through another path to get back to the car, one that went through the side of the stage. As we passed the stage, my eyes caught a light to my left and saw two top spots, one on a chair, and one lighting a stool and his guitar. I exclaimed, “Well, this looks staged…” He replied, “It is. Take a seat.”The rest was all caught on video, so I’ll let that speak for me. It was absolutely perfect. Here are some important notes:1. Marianas Trench is my absolute favourite band, one that we listen to on every road trip. The particular song he sang for me (Beside You) was the song we were listening to and I was singing to in the car, 3 months into dating, that he realized he would marry me.2. Rylee spent a year and a half coordinating for my sisters from out of town and one of my nieces to be available for the date and to travel to be with us. He had been dropping little lies to me to make the surprise work for just as long. The reveal of the backup singers was a complete surprise, as in the darkness, I believed that we were alone. Rylee’s dad was playing the drum and his mom and siblings were to his left. My parents and siblings were to the right. It really felt like the families were welcoming both of us together in that moment.3. Rylee had help from several technician friends from work whom he trusted with such an important task. They were running the lights and the sound (which Rylee had designed in advance) and pulling flys to ensure that the confetti dropped.4. His shift at work had been a decoy. He had actually coordinated a dress rehearsal with everyone involved.5. We really did go to dinner after it was all said and done, but we went with our entire family. And we were late for our reservation.
